My plans for 2013

Since today is the last day of 2012 and even though I don't normally do these kinds of things, I figured that 2013 is going to be quite special for me, & so I might as well treat it differently.

So here goes my New Years' resolutions for the coming 2013:

  • Lifestyle change
This is a very broad category. I've been trying to live more or less healthy for a while now, however with travelling and full time job it's really hard.

This year, my goal is to stick to going to the gym regularly and eat at least 3 home-cooked meals per week. I noticed that if I eat out, I tend to eat bigger portions and I usually drink sodas. On the other hand, if I prepare my meals at home, I go for healthier, leaner options.

  • One night without technology
I am pretty much obsessed with my iPad and even though my laptop has recently died, I didn't think about it twice. iPad is my best friend and it really starts to annoy me. So the other day, after having talked to A, we decided that we'd try to have at least one night per week when we'd do things that are not technologically enhance. We could do sit ups together, go for a long walk or just read magazines in bed. I have to say that as difficult as it might be, I really feel like it could be very good for us.

  • Buying less make-up
Those of you who know me in person, know very well that I'm a big make-up geek :) I have way too much make-up and I constantly buy more.

After having thought about it for a while, I came to the conclusion that I really need to stop and spend my money on something more useful. Don't get me wrong, I will still buy a new mascara or eyeshadow, if I run out, but I won't buy something just because it's pretty. Wish me luck

Some of you might think, 3 resolutions??? Only???

As I said, I have never done this before, and I'd rather have 3 NY resolutions that I actually stick to than 50 which I'm going to forget on the 3rd of January;) that's my logic as least;)

Have a great NYE party and a wonderful New Year!!!

Belgian hidden treasures

Every now & then living in Belgium brings you the little gems in the form of the most delicious chocolates ever. The other thing that can surprise you, and often does, can be beer. Yes, that's right, Belgium is a kingdom of good beer.

Truth be told, my taste for beer is rather particular and I don't enjoy it, really, unless we're talking sweet cherry or raspberry beers. But the other day when my better half brought home The Best Beer In The World, literally, I couldn't help but try a sip or two...

Westvleteren, as this is the beer I'm talking about, is really the best beer in the world.

RateBeer.com first named Westvleteren 12 the "Best Beer In The World" in 2002 after tallying the results of their now-annual RateBeer Best competition. Many beer drinkers rank Westvleteren 12 among their favourite beers.

In June 2005, when Westvleteren 12 was again highlighted as "Best Beer in the World", news organizations followed this up and articles appeared in the international press, highlighting the beer ranking and the unusual business policies.

This rather special drink is made by Belgian monks who refuse the traditional marketing trends & make enough beer to only cover for any necessary reparations at the abbey. As they say : We make the beer to live but we do not live for beer.

Beer lovers around the world claim this is IT and even though the prices are rather steep, noone seem to complain.

If you're interested in knowing more about this unusual beer, take a look at this article & with any luck, you might even get to buy it and taste it one day...

Healthy, not healthy, food...

Ok, so it all started with the recipe I saw on one of the blogs I read. If you like cooking and, most of all, reading about cooking, then you should definitely check out this blog. It's written by the lovely Christie who definitely knows what's good. To make things even more, well, yummy, she posts amazing pictures and makes you crave her delicious dishes even more.

I'm just warning you that if you're a sweet tooth like me, then this recipe is a must try for you! You'll love it!

It's rather life changing too, as it's simple, nutricious and super delicious.

The magical name of this bad boy? Overnight Oats! Here's how you prepare them:

Overnight Oats, Two Ways

Makes: 1 large serving

Ingredients

    For the overnight oats:
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not quick cooking)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

Ville de Bruxelles, my story

If you have the honour of living in the Kingdom of Belgium, every now & then you'll find yourself at your commune.

Mine, happens to be one of the biggest ones in Brussels, which certainly is not a blessing. On the contrary, since it's so densely populated and to make it worse, mostly by foreigners, the officials working at the commune never have the time to properly explain things & are always on the edge of snapping.

From my own experience, I know it's best to nod, agree and only ask difficult questions in your mediocre French if you absolutely have to.

Also, letting them know that you speak English and English only won't get you many fans...Sadly, Bruxelles 1000 is known to be one of the most user unfriendly places in the whole of Brussels.

Waiting... How painful
On the pics you can see a bit of the building and me wanting badly to be done :)
Welcome to Bxl 1000
Some historical info I didn't bother reading
Welcome to Bxl 1000
I had the pleasure of going there today to pick up my provisional driver's licence.

Surprisingly, though, the whole thing took me about half an hour & I was so shocked that I ended up buying myself a t-shirt to bring myself back to reality ;)

Do you hate bureaucracy, just as me? Or you quite like it?

Be nice this Christmas

We rush throughout the whole year, trying to be effective, do what we're supposed to do. We multitask most of the time, taking care of our families, pets, bills etc.

We are constantly rushing through lives trying to remember about everything we need to remember about, without going crazy...

Then on this one special day we stop!

The nativity scene at A's house
We thankfully realize that its Christmas and that we don't have to do anything. We can finally sit down with our favourite camomile tea & relax for a bit.

On that day, it is really OK not to rush, but take your precious time. With everything...

It's fine to enjoy doing nothing, and taking life as it should be - slow, pleasant and filled with nice moments.

You can stay in bed longer, if you want to, play with your food, listen to Christmas carols, or even sing them out loud.

Because everything seems much better on that day, we're consequently much more relaxed, smiling, more understanding towards one another...

This one day, we don't shout at them, we don't say one word too many, we are patient and maybe even sweet...

Why? Because its Christmas!

I can't seem to stop wondering what would things be like, if all this happened on more than just one day. If the niceness, politeness and understanding towards others was a rule on any day of the year, and not just that one 25th of December...

Call me crazy, but I really think that we should be good Always! And yeah, I know that the word 'good' means everything & nothing these days. But I just feel like it's perfect to describe what we should try and be. Every single day of our lives. Not just Christmas day...

Hola y que tal?

How are you and how's your holiday going so far?

I'm still in a beautiful Spain, but just got back to civilisation where I can upload pics and blog posts ;) I guess I don't need to tell you how excited this makes me :)

Before that, it was a bit hard, as we've been in the heart of the Pyrenees where internet connection is rather poor (for obvious reasons).

If you've never been to the Pyrenees, then you might be interested to know more abut this amazing land. During my 3-day stay, I got to see Benasque, Cerler and Hopital de Benasque. The places are so high up that it's really amazing how people back then could even try & lead normal lives. Without tv, radio, proper roads or tools, somehow they managed to build pretty impressive settlements.

Instead of talking, however, I'd like to share some pics of those places and perhaps one day, you get to visit them as well. If you can go, do, as it's simply breathtaking!

Cerler ski resort
We stayed at a lovely old town of Cerler. It's absolutely magical and underrated. People tend to go to Benasque, as it's much bigger, with more night life, shops and of course, tapas. But we really enjoyed the stone houses, smell of burned wood in the air, and the mountain feel of the place.

Lots of "pistas"
Every morning, at around 9 am, we'd go to ski. I have to be honest, I'm not a good skier, but my fiancé is pretty amazing. We did green and blue pistes together, and I loved every second of it. The vistas were spectacular!
I was afraid at first
That's the view you see when you go up on a chair lift! Marvellous, isn't it? After a while, you get used to the beauty surrounding you, but now, looking back at those pics, I can't believe we just came back from there!

Cerler ski resort has 72 kilometers of marked pistes, so even a complete beginner & an experienced skier can find something up to their liking. Everything is really well-maintained with helpful instructors around to assist you if you ever need them.

Hopital de Benasque, amazing place
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, a very special day in Poland. I think this is my third Christmas Eve in Spain, and I have to tell you that nothing beats a Polish Wigilia. I will certainly be missing my family and I'm sure going to shed a few tears as they're not with us in here. Next year, guys, next year!

I wish you all happy, relaxing and peaceful Christmas among your loved ones!

My Essie love

In a few hours I am leaving for Spain. Yep, this year I'm not spending my Christmas holiday in Poland, but in Spain. That's what you get if your fiancé is Spanish, I guess. We have a deal that each year we rotate where we spend Christmas. This year, it's Spain but next year, it'll be Poland.

It doesn't matter, really :)

All I'm telling you is that I'm leaving in one hour but even though I'm still not properly packed, I really wanted to write a post. Something that wouldn't be too heavy, as Christmas is around the corner.

And his is how I chose my Essie nail polishes to be the pretty topic of today's post! Aren't they a lovely bunch?

My collection. There's still some space left in the box!
I don't know what it is about Essie nail polishes but I really love them. They're kind of new to Brussels beauty scene too. Before Di introduced them, we could only get them in nail salons or abroad. So, thank you, Di, for being a good sport ;)

As you can see, my Essie collection is not huge. The way I see it, there's still some space left in the box, so I can justify buying two more...or five! ;)

What about you? Do you like painting your nails?

What about your favourite nail polish brand? Can you recommend me something?

Have an amazing time this Christmas!

I will try and wish you that officially on the 24th of December, too!

Les petits riens

Every now and then I get amazed by Brussels and its social aspect. For example, the other day, my better half decided to show me something he knew I haven't seen yet. Namely, Les Petits Riens. It's a place like no other. Located in the cozy cartier of Chatelain, walking distance from my flat, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it.

The entry
Looking like any other building in the neighbourhood, this place is huge!

it is also a true victory of socialists' thinking to help out the ones who are less fortunate, and try to do it in such a way that they don't feel like it's charity.

Les Petits Rien's motto is "second hand, second life". How true!

Think about it, how often do you find yourself thinking that your basement is starting to resemble a battlefield just simply because you didn't feel like cleaning in there for years. Hell, not only the basement... In our small flat, we managed to collect plenty of things we didn't need in the first place, but since they are still in good condition we can't seem to make ourselves throw them out.

Let Petits Riens believe that someone's trash is somebody else's treasure. They collect the things you want to get rid of (clothes, furniture, books, decorative objects) and then sell them at their store. Moreover, they help out the homeless in their everyday lives, i.e. finding work, food and clothing and, often, they also organise little gatherings, such as the one pictured below.

Choir singing christmas carols
Furniture section
I have to tell you, I love the concept and will be definitely coming back. And judging by the amount of people in there, I am not alone.

Corset

As you might already know, I am a soon to be bride. My big day is in October next year, and until recently, I've been rather anxious about the choice of my wedding dress. I thought I had found something nice in Poland, but it wasn't until last weekend that I actually got to LOVE the dress.

Why am I rambling? There's a point to this story, believe it or not ;)

At the store, I got to try on many lovely dresses. They were truly stunning, but to me, the most effortlessly amazing were always the ones with a corset. I don't know what it is about corsets, but they are quite the miracle-workers. They just give you a great hourglass figure and make even the most regular dress quite extraordinary.

At this point I should probably post some pics of my one and only wedding dress, but it's a bit too soon for that, I'm afraid. Instead, I'll show you an amazing video with Dita vin Teese who wears a corset like nobody's business! Also, probably due to The fact that she got some ballet training, she moves like I only wish I could... Am I jealous? Hell yeah! Just watch her & let me know what you think!

In this house...

Today was supposed to be the thought of the day kind of post, but instead I will show you an amazing picture from the Amazing Creations (http://www.7amazingcreations.com/)

Whoever said that a picture was worth a thousand words, was right! Doesn't it just say it all?
I personally love it & I'm hoping once I have a house, this will be my staircase :-)

Inspire me, pretty please…

Since last week I sort of inaugurated it, I will try & stick to it. Namely, my Wednesday posts will be (hopefully) inspiring you guys to change. It can be just about seeing things differently, learning about some new concept, or actually going ahead & actively changing something in your life.

We all have aspects of our lives that need improvement– it can be our careers, relationships, bodies or anything else. The list can go on forever, really.
Making changes in any of those aspects of our lives may seem very difficult, impossible, even. But I always say: ‘breath’ & ‘one step at a time’, as these two phrases just capture it all so nicely.

You don’t have to panic when you realize that things in your present life aren’t perfect. The fact that you noticed something’s not right just proves that you’re opening up yourself to change. That’s rather huge!
This is also the first step on your path to change. Make sure that when you decide to change things, you think it through & that you’re doing it for the right reasons.

Even though you might feel inspired to change things around you today, tomorrow something might happen which will make you loose you initial enthusiasm entirely. That’s when it’s good to check out the advice of people who are very good at inspiring others- one blog post at a time!

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas aka I can't wait for Christmas

Hello there,
are you all feeling Christmassy yet? I sure am, with my Christmas decorations all over my living room, scented candles burning pretty much non stop & the warm 'soul food' which I cook almost daily!

I have to say that I love this time of the year when everyone is anxiously anticipating Christmas.
Yes, we do buy way too much food & presents. And yes, we spend a bit too carelessly with our credit cards getting painfully maxed out...
But then there's also the precious time with our friends & family. The many talks, walks, drinks & all that's out there that we do to make ourselves feel like the Christmas is coming.
Can't wait for this year's Christmas!

Funny Christmas Season Ecard: Not having to work on Christmas is the new Christmas bonus.

Tea, the thing I love the most

As a true tea addict, I tend to live by the following:

picc

Sometimes things look really bad, and then you have a cup of tea and the whole thing seems just so much more doable, easier to handle and not so impossible after all!

Yes, that's tea doing its magic! Go ahead, drink some! The world should be a happy place, so give yourself a moment of relaxed time with your favorite blend.

I'm making myself a cuppa as we speak ;)

Product rave!

Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum & Nicea Lip Butter
Hey guys,

Today I'm coming to you with a product rave! Well, two products, actually!

The Bourjois foundation is something I could definitely live without, esp. since I still have Chanel's Vitalumiere Aqua, Dior's Nude & Rimmel's Wake me Up foundations. However, a girl has to do what a girl has to do, and so I bought this foundation. Especially since I heard Tanja from Pixi2woo rave about it a lot. And no surprise here, the product is absolutely amazing! Well, given I have been wearing it for over 5 hours only, but it does have every chance of becoming my all time favorite.

The other product is something I cant live without. Especially in the winter time. Namely, it's the lip butter. For some reason, Nivea products have been discontinued in Belgium. We used to have Nivea make up and body care, but now we only seem to have the body and skin care range. Thats why I got pleasantly surprised when I spotted this lip butter at Di the other day.

It's super moisturizing without feeling sticky. And the smell...oh, I totally wish I could show it to you. There's 3 different kinds that you can choose from (classic, raspberry and vanilla/macademia nut). Amazing!

Have you tried any of these products yet? What do you think?

Making up my face ;)

Hello there,

As promised some time ago, here comes a post on make up. Those of you who know me, know that I absolutely love beauty related things, and I spend way too much money on make up.

Starting from the top left
  1. MAC's paint pot in Bare Study. This has been a favorite of mine for a while now. Not only can it be worn by itself, but also for those of you who, like myself, have oily eyelids, it's a life saviour. It serves as a beautiful base for any other eyeshadow you decide to use. It helps the eyeshadow to stay put all day. It doesn't crease. I really have only good things to say about it.
  2. MAC's Mineralize Skin Finish in Fair/Medium. I'm not crazy about this product, even though so many beauty gurus love it. It does the job, but not a holly grail for me. i'm basically trying to use it up.
  3. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua with spf15. It's a really nice and light foundation. As everything from chez Chanel, it doesn't disappoint and I've been faithfully reaching out for this one for more than a year. As I'm writing this, some of you who follow me on @shinethroughme might already know that I used the current promotion on Bourjouis cosmetics & bought their Healthy Mix foundation.
  4. Clinique eyeliner in black. It's very creamy and reminds me of a smaller and sleeker version of the Bad Gal chubby liner by Benefit.
  5. MAC's blush in Peaches. I bought this some time ago because the MAC's make up artist said it would look good on me. It's one of those colors who instantly make you feel more put together. I really highly recommend it.
  6. Petal Beauty brushes *

PF-E0TB - Petal Beauty Face Foundation Travel-size makeup Brush - http://www.petalbeauty.com/face-foundation-travel-black.html

PE-BSTB (Free Gift) - Petal Beauty Eye Blending Travel-size makeup - http://www.petalbeauty.com/eye-blending-travel-black.html

These are really nice travel-sized alternatives for MAC's brushes. If you're just starting out with make up, or you're on a budget, but you'd like to buy some make up brushes, this is definitely the way to go. They are soft and durable, and do the job perfectly.

Finally, Clinique mascara, nr 7 on my picture. It's a good thickening mascara which, again, is not absolutely amazing, but it's a solid performer and when in doubt, I reach for it. It does the job very well and I never regret using it.

Having said that, you have to know one thing about me, I still havent found the perfect mascara amd even though I've been searching high and low, I have not been this lucky. That's why if you know something worth recommending, please do tell!

There it is, guys! My most used products of the month.

Do let me know if I'm missing out on some good stuff! And comment, comment, comment. Your comments make my day!

Hugs from snowy Brussels

Challenging Wednesday

I can summarize the most successful people I’ve ever known with one trait:
their complete willingness to challenge mainstream ideas.
To go against the flow.

Most people try & take the safer route, because they’re afraid of being different and failing.

If you do nothing amazing, but you go with the crowd, then you don’t look stupid, right?

But then, sadly, you also miss out on the amazing opportunities life gives you!

If you always follow what others say or do, you will never be truly honest with yourself. More so, you will probably never be extraordinary either. And I don't wish it on you!

That's why, try & think of today as if it's a whole new chapter. The chapter to the brand new you who has all the will power it takes to go ahead & think or act differently than the socially accepted norm.

After all, this is where amazing happens!

‎"THROUGH A RAPIST’S EYES"

It seems that a lot of attackers use some tactic to get away with violence. Not many people know how to take care of themselves when faced with such a situation."Through a rapist’s eyes!" A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who’s clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.

3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.

4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.

5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.

6] Number three is public restrooms.

7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they don’t have to worry about getting caught.

8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming.

9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.

10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you’re not worth it.

POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk:

"can’t believe it is so cold out here, we’re in for a bad winter". Now that you've seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.

2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell "Stop" or "Stay back!" Most of the rapists this man talked to said they’d leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.

4] If someone grabs you, you can’t beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh - HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.

5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. If you slap a guy’s parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you’ll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our
instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he’s out of there.

6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible.

7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, don’t dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel
little silly at the time, but you’d feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL ….

1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.

2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from you…. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!

3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver won’t see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.

4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DON’T DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
A. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
B. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
C. Look at the car parked on the driver’s side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).

7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked “for help” into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

I spotted this on Tumblr and decided it needed to be shared. This is an amazing article on tips about how to stay safe. It's always better to be safe than sorry even if you think you're being paranoid. Please share this post, this is something every woman, or man needs to read.
DISCLAIMER: I did not write this article, it has been passed around on Tumblr but had no fixed 'webpage' to send readers to, this is why I decided to share and post this on my blog
